N1 is where the written language parts company with the spoken one.

This volume is the body and what keeps it going: organs, illness and cure, the mouth, food and drink and the wine jar — and then the day itself, from five different words for daybreak to the almanac that counts them. Every character gets a spread of its own, laid out the same way every time.

Readings you can hear. Every on'yomi and kun'yomi with its own example words, because a reading you cannot hear in a real word is not yet knowledge.
